Hand-Under-Hand Support

This downloadable guide explains what hand-under-hand support is and how it can provide respectful, trauma-informed physical motor support for teens and adults with whole-body apraxia.

It covers how hand-under-hand can support motor planning, proprioceptive awareness, participation, safety, autonomy, and body trust without taking control of the person’s movement.

You’ll also find examples for dressing, stirring, reaching for a cup, and AAC or device access, along with respectful prompts, what to avoid, signs of distress, and guidance for adjusting support based on the person’s body communication.
