The Power of Child-Led Play in Natural Environments
By Jessica Jordan, MS. OTR/L
This little ray of sunshine is developing her vestibular and proprioceptive systems in a natural, play-based experience. Not to mention being outdoors near the beautiful Pacific Ocean and soaking up the sun!
These kinds of outdoor experiences offer more than just fresh air—they create real-time opportunities for connection, exploration, and whole-body learning. Naturalistic play invites the body to move in ways that feel intuitive and joyful. It encourages kids to take healthy risks, solve problems, and connect movement with meaning. Whether climbing a log, splashing in a puddle, or running through open space, this type of sensory-rich play nurtures both the nervous system and the spirit.
We often talk about school readiness, life skills, or developmental milestones—but the heart of learning begins right here: in the sand, on the grass, under the sun. These moments of play build foundations for regulation, confidence, and communication, even when we don’t see them right away. There is so much happening beneath the surface when bodies are given space to move freely and interact with nature.
Remind yourself that, as a parent, friend, or therapist that opportunity to develop and learn (both as children and adults) is ALWAYS available. Sometimes we can get caught up in the meeting of “milestones” when in reality, we all develop at our own pace. We learn and explore all at the perfect time for who we are. Just by being present with your child and experiencing the world, you are supporting them in learning new skills and experiencing this beautiful life we live!
Let me know what lesson you’ve learned today or a skill you’ve developed. For me, it’s how to put an emoji in a blog post.😉
