Why Affirmations Support Regulation and Growth

Affirmations are a powerful and accessible way to support emotional development and self-regulation. Simple, encouraging phrases like “I am strong” or “I am safe” can help shift emotional energy and provide a gentle anchor when things feel overwhelming.

Research has shown that words can become reality. What we say to ourselves—silently or out loud—can shape how we experience the world around us. Affirmations are one way to offer the nervous system a small moment of reassurance, especially when things feel uncertain or dysregulating.

A Hands-On Way to Practice Affirmations With Kids

We recently explored this in a session using a short and engaging children’s book that introduced affirmations in a playful, age-appropriate way. We followed it with a creative activity: making our own “I am...” posters! Kids cut and glued colorful statements like :

  • I am happy

  • I am kind

  • I am focused

  • I am unique

This hands-on approach let each child find words that felt true for them. There’s something powerful about putting language to feelings—especially when those words are rooted in strength, safety, or self-worth.

Using “I Am” Statements in Everyday Routines

When your child is feeling sad, frustrated, overwhelmed, or unsure, “I am” statements can provide gentle support for their emotional regulation.

They don’t need to be fancy or formal—just simple, kind, and repeated with love. Over time, this small practice can help kids build an inner voice that feels supportive and steady.

Try tucking an “I am” statement into your child’s morning routine, school lunchbox, or bedtime rhythm. Sometimes, just one phrase can help create a small pocket of peace.
